Except for a ten-year hiatus during the period 1990-1999 the Barton Bulletin later renamed Barton Historical Society Newsletter has been published continuously since December 1959. Begun as a simple two-page letter it soon evolved into a two-, three- or four-times a year publication. Originally mimeographed on five sheets of legal-size paper (in the pre-Xerox days), by the decade of the 1980's it had become a once-a-year offset-printed booklet of 90 to 140 pages. It is now (2008) published quarterly and printed commercially as a 16- or 20-page edition in black & white and mailed First Class to all BHS members. Always folksy and jammed with family information and photographs about primarily the "Bartons of the South" (USA) it's readership soon spread to nearly every state in the Union under its first two editors, Eleanor (Keese) Barton ("a Barton by both birth and choice") and Thelma (Stephens) Gilreath. Anecdotes, family histories, biographies, excerpts of Bibles, Wills, and Probate Records as well as queries from subscribers abound. The "Tale of the 100-Wagon Train to Texas" was printed at least twice along with many other family legends. Fortunately, a copy of every issue exists and is archived in the files of the Barton Historical Society. All thirty-six years have been scanned digitally and indexed and are available on a single Data DVD. There is a complete Master Index as well as ten different sub-indexes: Every Name, Cemeteries, Churches, Military Units & Bases, Photographs, Rivers Lakes & Streams, Schools & Colleges, Ships & Sailing Vessels, Slaves, and Greek Letter Organizations. Note: your computer requires a DVD drive, not just a CD-ROM drive. The massive 2.9 Gigabytes of information would have required five CD's instead of just one DVD. Any BARTON researcher with ancestors in the United States will want a copy of this DVD for their library. It is available for $25.00 postage pre-paid and may be ordered from: Barton Historical
